Ireland is full of lakes and rivers with individual legends about how they were formed. The ancient Irish believed that each lake, pond and river had different magical powers from the otherworld. Bathing and drinking from them could give them magical powers such as healing, knowledge and inspiration. They believed they could travel to the otherworld through water. The ninth wave was where Manannán, one of the sea Gods lived. ‘Imramma’ was a sacred sea voyage beyond the ninth wave in search of the otherworld. I like to think of this journey beyond the ninth wave as our internal, life-long journey of personal transformation.
